10 must do's in Rome

The Italian city of Rome is perfect for a city trip. However, all the different Roman ruins, churches and other sights can be overwhelming. Which sights are the most important ones? Here 10 must do’s when you are on a city trip in Rome.

Throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain

This is probably the most important thing you will have to do in Rome. It is believed that if you throw a coin in the fountain you will come back to the city of Rome in the future. Worth the try, right? Furthermore it would be smart to go to the fountain very early in order to escape the crowds (with early I mean around 7 / 8 o'clock in the morning).

Wander around the streets of Trastevere

This quarter is located on the other side of the Tiber river than most of the sights in Rome (except for Vatican City). Also pay a visit to the church Santa Maria in Trastevere, which is believed to be the first Maria church in Rome. Furthermore, take your time to walk around and go look for a nice restaurant to eat the best pasta you will ever eat!

Climb the Spanish Steps

Climb the 135 Spanish Steps, which owe their name to the fact that they are located next to the Spanish Embassy, to have a beautiful view over Rome. The Spanish Steps are one of the most loved meeting places for both the people of Rome and tourists.

Bake your own Pizza

Learn how to bake your own pizza during a workshop pizza baking with a real Italian chef. The ultimate evening and bucketlist experience for a trip in Rome. Pizza Peperoni or one with mozerella and basil? We couldn't choose and it turned into a pizza with a jumble of ingedrients. Want to know more about this amazing experience? Read this blog.

Look up in the Pantheon

Pay a (free) visit to the beautiful Pantheon. Did you know that this building is actually a rebuild of the original temple which was destroyed because of a fire in the year 80? Don’t forget to look up to the dome. When you are lucky you will be entertained by some pigeons who entered the Pantheon through the hole in the roof and who are a bit disoriented and not able to find the way out. Expect some cheering when they finally do.

Climb the dome of the St. Peter’s Basilica

Enjoy the symmetric view of St. Peter Square from the top of the Basilica. Important to know: even if you buy an elevator ticket you will have to more than 300 steps. Escape even more stairs by paying a bit more for the elevator ticket. Sweating still guaranteed.

Go back in time at the Forum Romanum and Colosseum

Without visiting these Roman ruins, of which one is even one of the seven new wonders of the world, your stay in Rome is not complete. Take your time to wander around and go back in time. More information about these two Roman ruins in this blog.

Go rowing in the lake of Villa Borghese

Look beyond the many museums in the public park Villa Borghese and walk to the cute little lake. Here you can rent rowing boats to recreate the famous rowing scene in the movie ‘The Notebook’. Make sure you also note the turtles which live in the lake.

Listen to the Sunday speech of the Pope at the St. Peter's square

Every Sunday at 12.00 the Pope gives a speech (if he is in Rome) from a window on the St. Peter Square in Vatican City. Go listen to it and enjoy the thousands of people who joined you. Make sure you are there on time since you will have to go through security checks just like at the airport. Check this website for the Pope's schedule: http://www.papalaudience.org/schedule

Enjoy the sunset at Giardino Degli Aranci

Act like a local and buy a bottle of wine to bring it to the balcony with panorama view of the small park Giardino Degli Aranci to watch the sun go down. This will definitely be the most romantic sunset you will be able to see in Rome. More information? Read this blog.

Hopefully you will be able to cross all these points off your bucket list when you are visiting Rome, enjoy!

Love,
Daphne
